"Supernovae" is the plural form of the Latin word "supernova," which refers to the explosive death of a star. In any language where it is used, especially in scientific contexts, "supernovae" describes multiple instances of these stellar explosions. The term is derived from "super-" (meaning "above" or "beyond") and "nova" (meaning "new"), reflecting the sudden appearance of a bright, new object in the sky when a star explodes.
