During the Terror regime of 1793, and yet far from Paris, the population of Lyon did not escape the numerous executions ordered by Robespierre and the ruling power. The guillotine installed on the Place des Terreaux was so badly hit that some people in Lyon still refuse to cross the square in memory of their ancestors who were victims of the Terror.
