The exhibition presents works from the museum's collections focusing on deciphering, offering a fresh perspective on art history
Through a new thematic display, the Musée d’art moderne et contemporain de Saint-Étienne Métropole explores the many ways of looking at, interpreting, and transmitting works of art. Bringing together iconic pieces, recent acquisitions, and rarely shown works, the exhibition offers a transchronological journey through the museum’s collections.
Inspired by the reflections of historian Carlo Ginzburg on the “evidential paradigm,” the exhibition focuses on traces, clues, and details that help illuminate the history of artworks and their meanings. Provenance, context of creation, and successive interpretations: each work carries multiple narratives that continue to evolve over time
By bringing together different generations of artists and practices, “To Be Deciphered” invites visitors to become, in turn, observers and interpreters of the museum’s collections.
