Through his artistic practice (painting and sculpture), Christian VALVERDE raises himself the question about the man’place in his social and economic environment. Because his status as an artist, is he a agent of change or just a spectator and consumer (homo economicus) of a story that goes beyond him? A philosophical question, of course, with no response.

In resonance with the 18th Lyon Biennale of Contemporary art, the paintings and sculpture of Christian VALVERDE’s artist question the place of humans in the word that is their us. In these works, humans outlines appear in the form of fragments, traces, clues, remains. His works don’t depict the face or the body in their entirety but what remains in the end: a presence hanging in the air, a fragile persistence, between appearance and fading. VALVERDE is in the process of sowing doubt. Because of his status as an artist, is he a agent of change, a witness or just a spectator or even a consumer (the homo economicus) of a story that goes beyond him? A philosophical question, of course, no response? For VALVERDE, pascalien doubt is not far removed from the artist’ s concerns and reflections.
