La Conciergerie is hosting two artists from Senegal in residence: sculptor Jean-Marie Bruce and painter-performer Cool Diabang. They serve as a bridge between two cultures and two aesthetics, blending traditional techniques and practices with the use of reclaimed materials.
Jean-Marie Bruce’s most iconic works are his "Portes" (Doors) - sheets of metal, rusted or weathered by time, upon which "shadows" appear. For the past few years, his work has focused on creating pieces from driftwood, mostly remnants of destroyed boats, serving as symbols of what the sea casts aside, brings back, or connects.
Cool Diabang lives and works between France and the Casamance region. A performance artist, his work revolves around the environment, the socio-political landscape, and mystical and spiritual realms. As an artist and cultural advocate, he is actively involved with various associations dedicated to fostering art and culture in rural areas. His current work focuses on environmental and nature conservation.
Both trained at the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Dakar between 1980 and 1992, each explores, through their own distinct approach, our relationship with the environment, our societies, and the world.
