A former inmate of Saint-Paul Prison, Didier Chamizo was behind the mural in the tunnel linking Saint-Paul to Saint-Joseph, created in 1989. From that seminal moment to his international career, he looks back on his journey and on a life in which art has become a path to freedom.
An artist whose life and work are full of colour, Didier Chamizo embodies an extraordinary journey in which art becomes an act of freedom. From an early age, he developed a passion for drawing and painting, which became a means of expression and liberation. His life took a decisive turn during his imprisonment at Saint-Paul Prison in Lyon, where he transformed this period of confinement into a time of creation.
There, he founded a painting workshop, exchanged ideas with fellow inmates and, in 1989, took part in the creation of a monumental fresco in the tunnel connecting Saint-Paul and Saint-Joseph prisons — a collective work that has become a unique testimony to this chapter of history. It was also during this period that he developed his distinctive artistic universe, somewhere between abstraction and figuration, and created what he called “lettered abstraction-figuration”, a visual language where words, signs and figures come together to tell the story of the world. His first series, Liberté (Freedom), was born from this desire to create despite the walls.
After his release, Chamizo embarked on a remarkable artistic journey, moving from improvised studios to galleries and the highest circles of contemporary art, while never losing his independence or his strength of conviction. His work, at once colourful, committed and provocative, reflects on the injustices, contradictions and transformations of our society.
From Saint-Paul Prison to the highest circles of contemporary art, he will share a journey shaped by ruptures, struggles and acts of creation, marked by an engaged body of work that questions inequalities, the contradictions of our time and the place of the individual in society. An exceptional encounter with an artist who demonstrates that art can open doors where walls seem impossible to overcome.
