Choreographer Mats Ek, known for his unique and highly theatrical style, harnesses the elemental energy of Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring. This exceptional production, entering the repertoire of the Lyon Opera Ballet, will be performed live with the Orchestra. Sharon Eyal’s House will open the evening.
When it was first performed in 1913 by the Ballets Russes in Paris, in Nijinsky’s legendary choreography, The Rite of Spring, set to music by Igor Stravinsky, made history and sparked intense controversy.
Since then, this symphonic epic has inspired dozens of choreographers who have taken on the challenge of this dazzling burst of energy and this primitive ritual of seasonal renewal. The renowned Mats Ek presented his own version of The Rite of Spring in 1984 and reimagined it in 2022 for the English National Ballet: a choreography passed on this season to the dancers of the Lyon Opera Ballet, which had not staged a version of The Rite since 1982.
Mats Ek recaptures the tribal energy, powerful movements and sensual fervour of Stravinsky’s music in a ballet imbued with strength and poetry. The dancers will be accompanied by the Lyon Opera Orchestra, which will perform the score live under the baton of Christoph Altstaedt.
In the first half, Sharon Eyal’s House unleashes the power of a group, where bodies vibrate to convey the warmth of a great celebration to the electro beats of Ori Lichtik. The performance on Friday 6 November at 8pm is a Relax performance.
