Galerie Claire Gastaud presents Art in Nature, an exhibition dedicated to Nils-Udo, running from September 24 to November 7, 2026.
Bringing together a selection of historical photographs and recent paintings, the exhibition juxtaposes the two major strands of his work. The photographs trace over fifty years of creations made in nature, while the paintings attest to a practice that has remained constant since his early days. This body of work reveals the remarkable coherence of an artistic journey in which painting, photography, and in situ installations engage in a dialogue with one another.
Born in Bavaria in 1937, Nils-Udo is a founding figure of the Art in Nature movement. From the early 1970s, he developed a pioneering practice based on installations created exclusively from elements found on-site, forging a new path in the relationship between art and landscape. Whether ephemeral or enduring—depending on the materials used—these installations emerge from a close dialogue with their host environment.
"I never arrive in a landscape with a preconceived idea. Each work is a response to the situation I discover." Photography does not merely document the intervention; it is its culmination, composed like a painting.
As both a painter and a photographer, Nils-Udo continues to pursue an internationally acclaimed body of work that is held in numerous public collections and exhibited in major institutions.
