How does our social identity influence our perception of the world? From an olfactory perspective, this remains a great mystery. Géraldine Coppin, a professor of psychology at UniDistance Suisse and an associate member of the Interfaculty Center for Affective Sciences, will be joining us to present a scientific experiment prepared specifically for this event.
Géraldine Coppin, a professor of psychology at UniDistance Switzerland and an associate member of the Interfaculty Center for Affective Sciences, and her colleagues investigated whether our self-concept within a social group could influence our olfactory perception and cause us to perceive certain smells differently. A study was conducted to identify the link between the smell of chocolate and Swiss social identity.
A three-dimensional experiment was then analyzed, examining the hedonic quality (how pleasant do you find this smell?), intensity (how strong do you find this smell?), and familiarity (how familiar do you find this smell?). Based on this data, we will establish a research laboratory linking social identity to smells, collective memory to individual experience, and emotion to perception.

During this talk, Pascale Obolo will outline the various commitments that shape her life as an artist, filmmaker-researcher, edithor of the journal Afrikadaa, and curator, focusing on the themes of collectives and the commons. Together, we will gradually shift our focus toward the sensory and olfactory dimensions evoked by the concept of the commons.
