As early as 1978, Villeurbanne became the setting for an innovative cultural policy aimed at “fostering encounters between residents, citizens, and cultural activities of all kinds.” That same year, the city welcomed the Nouveau Musée, which would later become the Institute of Contemporary Art. For its public spaces, the city commissioned a series of ambitious works. Enriched over the years, this contemporary collection—a true open-air museum—is, in many respects, exemplary.
