We are not ugly we are just poor ðŸ˜ðŸ’€ðŸ¤¡ is a duo show by Garance Deprez and Raphaëlle Detheve. Through installation, video, and work with latex and imagery, Garance Deprez and Raphaëlle Detheve explore the narratives produced by skincare influencers on social media.
"We are not ugly we are just poor ðŸ˜ðŸ’€ðŸ¤¡" is written in the comment section of a YouTube video by an anonymous user. Since 2024, a trend has sparked a flood of videos titled "You're not ugly, you're just poor," bringing the economic issue back to the forefront of debates about the cost of beauty and its rituals.
This exhibition explores the dynamics of domination in the beauty and skincare industry on social media. In the intimacy of the bathroom, digital marketing's language exploits desires, vulnerabilities, and self-perceptions through systemic control over the body.
Garance Deprez and Raphaëlle Detheve lay out the gestures, words, and signs that make up these digital languages. Their latex works entraps excerpts gathered from the internet following a sociological approach of information processing. Videos and images are reworked to an overwhelming point, in response to the infinite flow of advices and products.
