Biography
Conceptual artist and composer, George Brecht was one of the leading figures of the American Fluxus collective, whose interdisciplinary investigations connect art, everyday life, and politics. Trained as a chemist, Brecht incorporated into his practice an exploration of chance, probability, randomness, and uncertainty. He conceived each of his works as an “event,” making no distinction between the art object and performance. In July 1965, George Brecht and Robert Filliou opened La Cédille qui sourit in Villefranche-sur-Mer, near Nice, imagined as a gallery-shop that functioned as a space for living, creating, and play.
