Initially designed by Tony Garnier to house the "Mouche slaughterhouses", the building was recovered in 1914 to host the "Lyon International Urban Exhibition", dedicated to the theme of the "Modern City". A large part of this Exhibition was in fact dedicated to the French colonies, whose villages, customs and inhabitants were exposed to the eyes of the French and European tourists who came in great numbers for this event.
