As examples of the “ordinary heritage” of the Castor utopia (1945–1955), the Castors Houses sprang up in a working-class neighborhood of Villeurbanne, a suburb that recently moved away from single-family homes toward high-density housing. Built on a cooperative model, without money, the Castors builders prioritized labor contributions and mutual aid, reusing materials and sharing ingenuity, sometimes even drawing lots for the houses once the collective construction was complete.
