The Palais Saint-Jean, or former Archbishop’s Palace of Lyon, stands adjacent to the apse of St-Jean Cathedral on the banks of the Saône River. Since the Middle Ages, it has been the seat of the temporal and spiritual authority of the archbishops of Lyon. Confiscated in 1906 following the law separating Church and State, the archbishops were forced to leave the premises. Today, the Palais St-Jean houses the Municipal Library of Lyon 5th and the Academy of Sciences, Literature, and Arts of Lyon.
