Born in Beirut, Lebanon,
where she lives and works.
Lebanese visual artist, poet, actor and singer, performer Rémie Akl, makes political pieces that straddle genres and media. Adapting strategies from social media and pop-music clips, she explores society’s various ills. Here, narrated by and featuring herself, the multidisciplinary artist takes the viewer on a journey rooted in the hardships faced by her home country, the dysfunctions of power, and the age of alienating technology globally prevalent today. Intertwining personal and collective stories, Akl’s work seeks to foster the empowerment of women and the emancipation of Arab youth, who refuse to watch their history being written from the sidelines.
