Kyoto, in the tenth century. Under the porch of an old temple in ruins, three men shelter from the rain. The wars and famines are raging. Yet a young monk and an old lumberjack are even more terrified by the trial to which they come to attend. They are so confused that they will force the third traveler to listen to the story of this trial: the one of a famous bandit accused of having raped a young woman and killed her husband, a samurai.
