A contemporary adaptation of Zola’s masterpiece. A powerful solo performance exploring workers’ memory, rebellion and love.

Étienne Lantier arrives in a mining town carrying hunger, dreams and anger. Deep inside the Voreux mine, he discovers a monster of iron and coal that devours lives.

In this adaptation of Germinal, writer and director Clément Rivière focuses the story through Étienne’s eyes. The iconic characters of Zola’s novel emerge in a poetic and popular tale where workers’ memory resonates with contemporary issues.

Performed by Mathieu Duboclard, this solo show combines storytelling, embodiment and visions in a minimalist staging that leaves room for the audience’s imagination.

Presented at the Saint-Étienne Mining Museum, GERMINAL explores what drives people to rise against injustice.

A powerful tale about rebellion, love and the monsters we create.
