Following paths and drawing the depth of the wind brings together works by Marwa Arsanios, Nelson Bourrec Carter, Rebecca Digne, Basir Mahmood and Flavie Pinatel.
The exhibition is structured around two actions – traversing and measuring – situated between movement and gesture. Following a path, crossing a boundary, carrying a load, drawing a line, running, singing. The gestures that run through the five films do not merely depict movement; they give rise to ways of inhabiting a place, of experiencing its constraints, of shifting its uses or of revealing its stories.
These actions, these movements, take on multiple forms: real in Flavie Pinatel’s work, thwarted in Marwa Arsanios’s, re-enacted in Basir Mahmood’s, intimate and sung in Nelson Bourrec Carter’s, or even sketched out through gestures in Rebecca Digne’s. They never denote a simple passage from one point to another, but rather a relationship between bodies and the spaces they traverse, inhabit or transform.
In contrast, several works remind us that these spaces are never neutral. They are measured, demarcated, appropriated, imagined, and traversed by the law, labour, memory or power relations. The filmed gestures do not stand in direct opposition to this order; rather, they shift its contours and open up new perspectives. Presented on three screens, with projections that alternate and interact, the works invite visitors to move from one image to the next. This movement thus becomes as much a motif of the exhibition as its compositional principle, transforming the act of moving through the space into an experience of montage, encounters and resonances between the films.
