The Cacl was founded in 1971 by two artists, Cécile Reims and Fred Deux. It is one of the oldest contemporary art centres located in a rural setting. Housed in a former village school and town hall—a building typical of nineteenth-century rural French schools—nestled against a cliff in the heart of the Haut-Bugey forest, the Cacl presents an open artistic programme that reflects the richness of an era marked by a profusion of artistic forms and critical inquiry. We strive to maintain a balance between intellectual rigour, care, and conviviality, while placing particular emphasis on mediation and public engagement.
