The photographer and video artist Randa Maroufi explores the notion of borders, those in-between spaces where opposites cohabit: legal and illegal, personal and impersonal, official rules and personal bearings. In her film Bab Sebta, shot in a studio, the artist reconstructs the daily life of thousands of people working in Ceuta, a Spanish enclave in northern Morocco and the gateway to Europe. In a series of long tracking shots, she shows the trafficking of manufactured goods; transported across the border on foot, they are exempt from tax or sold at discounted prices in Moroccan cities. Alternating points of view, she films the endless queues of men and women who prepare the colourful bundles or conceal goods. Blending documentary and fiction, Maroufi’s film does not only document a micro-territory of multiple trades and expectations; it examines a fragile world governed by economic and political flows of far greater proportions.
