How might one pass from one dream to another? In Centuries, Angela Goh focuses her attention on the act of passing itself: on the movement that has to be done. Created and recorded in the still vacant Musée des Tissus, the work shows a figure moving through its doorways and passages, appearing and disappearing as she passes. These recordings are projected near or within passageways throughout the museum. Some correspond to the architecture depicted, while others are displaced elsewhere in the building. Through doubling and dissonance, the projections form a maze of portals in which images are echoed or shifted. The choreography works through the same concern. The body twists and turns on itself, so that actions move forwards and backwards at the same time as the figure travels through space. Parts of the body come in and out of view as it turns on its own axes. The work dwells on this movement of passing, as things appear and disappear from view and in time. Absence carries the anticipation of presence, while presence holds the possibility of disappearance.
Movement and stillness structure Angela Goh’s choreographic work. Working with minimal staging, she treats gesture as both form and withdrawal, allowing actions to detach from the body that produces them. Her performances unfold through slowness and repetition, unsettling the notion of subjectivity. Under these conditions, presence is continuously redistributed between bodies, images and space.
