George Brecht selected this green marble river stone from the bed of the Rhône and engraved it with a single word: VIDE (“VOID”). Little else distinguishes it from any other stone. The single inscription alters how the stone is understood. Its physical weight and density contradict the word carved into its surface, creating a tension between material presence and implied absence. Characteristic of Brecht’s practice, this minimal gesture redirects attention from the object itself to the interplay of language and perception, raising questions about what constitutes fullness and emptiness, something and nothing, and how an ordinary stone comes to acquire artistic value.

Conceptual artist and composer, George Brecht was one of the leading figures of the American Fluxus collective, whose interdisciplinary investigations connect art, everyday life, and politics. Trained as a chemist, Brecht incorporated into his practice an exploration of chance, probability, randomness, and uncertainty. He conceived each of his works as an “event”, making no distinction between the art object and performance. In July 1965, George Brecht and Robert Filliou opened La Cédille qui sourit in Villefranche-sur-Mer, near Nice, imagined as a gallery-shop that functioned as a space for living, creating, and play.
