In Dubtraction, a pool of cold light falls upon an ordinary hot-dog stand. Rendered in a monochrome palette and surrounded by Fresnel theatre lights, the familiar language of commercial display is reduced to its underlying apparatus. Underneath the floor, low sound frequencies circulate below the threshold of conscious hearing, registering in the body before they become audible. Erwan Sene has described sound as something that can “permeate an audience and transform the entire space”. Drawing on research into theatre acoustics and the cyberpunk film classic Decoder (1984), in which ambient background music becomes an instrument for organising consumption, the installation exposes the sensory infrastructures through which commercial environments shape behaviour

In Erwan Sene’s practice, voices, frequencies, and found materials enter into relation, generating atmospheres that oscillate between familiarity and estrangement. His work explores processes of transformation and decay, in which remnants and ruins become open spaces for alternative imaginaries of the urban and its possible futures.
