An entire village’s stories are entrusted to a man who cannot speak. In the fable that underpins Pol Taburet’s paintings and sculptures presented here, Papa Tonnerre eventually recovers his voice, only to be cast out for revealing the secrets others had entrusted to him. Set in an imaginary place whose language and geography pertain to Guadeloupe and the Caribbean, the “fairy tale without a moral”, as Taburet calls it, offers neither justice nor redemption. Figures carry the fears, desires and memories of others, recalling a world in which the living and the dead remain bound to one another. The works imagine an archive carried in bodies rather than documents, where stories are passed on, even when speech is no longer possible.
Pol Taburet’s painted and sculpted forms exist between human, animal and object, presence and disappearance. Drawing on multiple visual languages without settling into any single tradition, his work develops an intuitive, unstable iconography shaped by tension and a persistent sense of the unknown.
