Lúa Coderch reproduces fragments of the Barcelona Pavilion, conceived by architect Mies van der Rohe and designer Lilly Reich for the 1929 International Exposition, as monumental inflatable structures. Replacing travertine, marble, onyx and glass with digitally printed PVC filled with air, the work separates the appearance of luxury from its material substance. The pavilion, dismantled shortly after the exposition and reconstructed decades later from photographs and surviving plans, already exists between building and image. Coderch extends this condition by asking what gives architecture its authority: the rarity of its materials, the labour required to construct it, or the images through which it circulates and acquires value. At Les Grandes Locos, several inflatable elements recreate the pavilion as a space where permanence gives way to reproduction and monumentality is sustained by air.
Lúa Coderch defines her works as “research devices”. They give rise to an exploration of historical and intimate narratives through their aesthetic, sensory and phenomenological dimensions. Taking the form of installations, texts, or narrative dispositifs, her work articulates language, image and fiction as investigative tools. By working with the textures and rhythms of everyday experience, she reveals how meaning is shaped through perception, where what appears evident is continually displaced and reconfigured.
