Two upright concrete columns face a vast wallmounted surface made from stretched reclaimed red truck tarpaulin and punctured by circular openings. The sculptures make palpable their reciprocal structures of support: the straps, cushions, clamps and steel armatures that hold the columns together remain exposed, whereas the ventilation pipes that both hold and are held by the stretched tarpaulin are revealed through the circular cuts. The wall piece and freestanding sculptures extend these relations through a migration of forms between architecture, the body and the vegetal world. As one moves through the space, changing alignments and overlaps continually reconfigure the sculptures’ forms.
Through sculpture, June Crespo explores the relationships between body, architecture and material. Working with concrete, resin, metal, and found elements, she employs processes of casting, fragmentation, and assembly to produce forms that oscillate between the organic and the industrial. Her work places balance and transformation in tension, creating structures that remain open and mutable, while engaging with questions of scale, proximity and the ways bodies inhabit and are shaped by space.
