In Germaine Kruip’s Portal, a polished brass frame is both a resonant instrument and an architectural passageway. Positioned at the point where light gives way to darkness, the frame is struck with a percussion mallet. It fills the surrounding space with sound and vibration. Its repeated activation recalls ritual, each strike returning attention to the threshold and to one’s presence within the space. From Egyptian pylons and Greek temple thresholds to Roman triumphal arches and mediaeval church portals, the threshold has long been understood as a site of transformation. As much felt as heard, the work extends the threshold beyond its architectural form, allowing passage to be experienced as a mental and bodily condition. Portal holds that moment of transition open, making the threshold a place to fully inhabit rather than simply to cross.
Germaine Kruip’s practice unfolds at the intersection of visual art, performance, and architecture, investigating the relationships between time, space, and perception. The artist explores the staging of elusive phenomena, such as shifting daylight and the passage of time; the relationship between art and ritual through repetition; historical attempts to create abstraction through geometry, and the desires, theories and ideologies that underpin them.
