Images, no less than bodies, have an afterlife. Barbara Breitenfellner’s installation traces that afterlife through a series of collages assembled from found photographs, scientific illustrations, magazines and art-historical reproductions, set against a wallpaper that is itself a collage. Lifted from their original contexts, images of animals, plants, bodies, planets, galaxies and built landscapes form a succession of mises-en-abyme, where every image opens onto another. Scales collapse and familiar systems of classification give way to shifting constellations of association that, as Breitenfellner puts it, “spring from the threatening, erotic and illogical universe of dreams”. For her, collage continually reassembles bodies, nature and knowledge, exposing the cultural constructions through which they are understood.
Dreams and associative processes underpin Barbara Breitenfellner’s installations and collages. Combining fragments from diverse sources, she constructs compositions marked by humour and disorientation.
