Since 2014, Luz Broto has been developing an evolving series of actions that invite people to exchange places in everyday life. Participants swap house keys, exchange homes, retrace another person’s daily route or temporarily assume one another’s routines. “What I do,” she says, is “to generate the conditions for something to happen, for a new situation, thought, feeling to exist.” The publication presented inside of the museum, Put Oneself in Place of the Other, gathers these actions developed between 2014 and 2022 in the form of protocols. On this ocassion the protocols had been translated to French, adapted to billboards and placed around Lyon. Each begins with an existing situation and introduces a subtle shift that alters how it is experienced. The gesture is often small, sometimes almost imperceptible, yet afterwards familiar places and routines can no longer be experienced in quite the same way.

Subtle shifts within social and spatial structures characterise Luz Broto’s site-specific interventions. Working within public space, she creates situations that invite individuals to exchange roles, routines, or positions, thereby revealing underlying systems of organisation and control. Her practice is grounded in minimal gestures of perceptual displacements, questioning notions of access, responsibility and collective behaviour while making the implicit rules governing everyday interactions visible.
