For three years, La Cédille qui Sourit was Robert Filliou and George Brecht’s experimental shop and meeting place in Villefranche-sur-Mer. More than an artists’ space, it put Filliou’s idea of a “poetical economy” into practice, proposing that value could be created through encounters, conversation and shared invention as much as through buying and selling. When financial difficulties forced the shop into bankruptcy in 1968, Filliou turned closure into a creative beginning. Emblazoned with the word BANQUEROUTE, the poster treats bankruptcy not as a dead end but as the route towards the ETERNAL NETWORK, or La Fête Permanente (“The Permanent Celebration”), an ever-expanding field of “manifestations, meanderings, meditations, microcosms, macrocosms, mixtures and “meanings”. The shop closes. La Fête Permanente begins.

At the core of Robert Filliou’s practice are ideas of language, play and exchange. Trained in economics and associated with Fluxus, he conceived art as a continuous, collective activity embedded in everyday life. His work challenges conventional notions of authorship, value and production, favouring openness, humour and participation. Through gestures that blur the boundaries between art and non-art, Filliou redefined creation as an ongoing process of thinking, making and sharing, an approach that continues to shape the understanding of art as a space of exchange.
