With Who Gets to Be Seen, Yehwan Song imagines a landscape where flows of water and information converge. Web pages projected onto precarious cardboard structures coexist with smartphones on which water scrolls through content in different languages. From the reservoir to the sluice gates and then the fountains, the installation draws on the historical regulation and distribution of water to question the unequal distribution of online visibility across languages. Between circulation and obstruction, sharing and inequality, the fountain becomes a model for a digital environment in which visibility is never distributed evenly. The tactile gesture, made automatic by the droplets, and the devices threatened by malfunction evoke the fragility of the infrastructures that shape access to information. The work thus reveals, behind the apparent fluidity of the internet, an environment marked by hierarchies and zones of invisibility.
At the intersection of interactive design and the web, Yehwan Song’s practice explores the transformations of the internet and the shifting positions progressively assigned to its users, from simply using interfaces to consuming content and ultimately producing data. By introducing elements of friction into environments designed to be seamless and “easy to use,” she makes visible the infrastructures that underpin the digital world and the mechanisms that shape modes of engagement with it.
