Micro-Event No. 41 / Flower Bed, first presented at Paris’s Nuit Blanche in 2011, is a performance that pays tribute to Kusama’s My Flower Bed (1962). Lying on a bed covered with hundreds of fresh gerbera flowers, Taniuchi attempts to sleep while listening to electronic lullabies composed by the music duo Hypo & EDH. As she wrote, “feelings of joy and enchantment, but also fear, solitude and insomnia, gradually become indistinguishable”. The video follows the performance through the night.

From the 1990s onwards, Tsuneko Taniuchi developed a series of performances she called Micro-Events: everyday actions staged in public that blur the boundaries between art and life. Her practice was shaped by figures she admired, including Yayoi Kusama, John Lennon and David Graeber. The artist examines how identities are performed and negotiated, testing the limits of social conventions and opening moments of uncertainty within familiar forms of exchange.
