Anda Kryeziu – Fryj, 2026

Anda Kryeziu recalls that, during the 1998–99 Kosovo War, her grandmother would pray softly and blow between whispered words, as though breath could offer protection. The conflict over Serbian rule and Kosovo Albanian independence displaced hundreds of thousands of people. Kryeziu carries this memory into Fryj – Albanian for “to blow air” – a sound sculpture made from a branching network of suspended steel pipes and valves. Air forced through the pipes meets resistance, producing pitches and microtonal harmonies alongside the artist’s voice. Normally concealed, such conduits carry water and heat through buildings; here, it is her breath that passes through them. The exposed pipes also form an anatomy through which breath becomes audible and gives the structure a voice. Architecture behaves like a body, while memory enters its infrastructure and breath persists within a structure that appears closed and unyielding.

Working across performance, composition, installation and theatrical experimentation, Anda Kryeziu creates immersive collective and sensory experiences. Her practice engages with contemporary realities while exploring questions of power, memory and resistance through research and the activation of sound archives. She has developed a particular interest in the history of political upheaval.
